Miles appointed to UTHSC Executive Committee
Dr. Toni Miles, professor in the department of family and community medicine, has been appointed as an at-large member of the Health Science Center's Executive Committee.
Dr. Francisco G. Cigarroa, Health Science Center president, who selected Dr. Miles for the position, said she will bring a new and valued perspective to the committee.
"During my first visit with the Board of Regents, I pledged to make the mentoring of our 'rising stars' a high priority," Dr. Cigarroa said. "Dr. Miles certainly fits this category and I welcome her to this position. Her insights and contributions are valuable to me and to the entire leadership team."
Dr. Miles has been with the Health Science Center since 1997. She is considered by her peers to be at the forefront of public health, family medicine and geriatrics. The National Association for Continence recently named her Outstanding Family Physician of the Year.
Her research interests include the minority elderly, chronic disease and prostate cancer. Dr. Miles is widely published in geriatric research. She is the lead author on a paper published in the Jan. 2 issue of the Journal of Gerontology titled "New-Onset Incontinence and Markers of Frailty: Data from the Hispanic Established Populations for Epidemiologic Studies of the Elderly."
Dr. Miles earned her bachelor's degree in biology from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. and her M.D. and Ph.D. in anatomy from Howard University in Washington, D.C.
