Give thanks for nurses

National Nurses' Week is May 6-12

National Nurses' Week, May 6-12, is a time to value the nursing profession. Texas is facing a shortage of registered nurses, with hospital RN and skilled nursing faculty vacancy rates exceeding 10 percent. This shortage is even more acute in rural areas, says Dr. Janet D. Allan, dean of the School of Nursing. "Texas is short 40,000 nurses and the demand will continue to grow," she says. "We also face a faculty shortage with 40 percent of existing faculty predicted to retire by 2010." What can be done? Recruit more women and men into nursing, work with clinical partners to improve the work environment to retain nurses, and interest more bachelor's and master's degree-prepared nurses in teaching and research careers, she says.

One way people can show their support for nurses and the nursing profession is by participating in the "5K Run for the Health of It" fun run and health walk from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday, May 4, at the Texas Research Park, 14815 Omicron Dr. Directions to the research park can be found at The Delta Alpha honor society and the Methodist Healthcare System are sponsors of the event. Prizes will be awarded to the male and female who place first, second and third in the competing age categories. Child winners also will be awarded prizes. All registrants will receive a ribbon for participation.

Registration forms can be picked up in the department of chronic nursing care in the School of Nursing, Room 2.100 or at the Texas Research Park beginning at 7 a.m. on the day of the event. The pre-registration fee is $15 for adults and $5 for children under 12 and includes a T-shirt, goody bag and healthy refreshments. Registration on the day of the event is $20. Proceeds will benefit the Friends of Nursing Scholarships.

Delta Alpha is the local chapter of the Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society. One of the primary goals of the chapter is to provide scholarships and research grant support for students in the UTHSC nursing program.
