Dieter Karkut, who since 1978 had worked in the division of photographic services, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, from a brain tumor. He was 61 years old.
Karkut is survived by his wife, Maida; his daughter and son-in-law, Wendy and Trinidad Medel; his son and daughter-in-law, Dieter Jr. and Yvonne Karkut; two grandsons, Ricky Medel and Dieter Karkut III; and his mother, Herta Kelly.
Al Julian, director of photographic services, said Karkut was a true leader and a facilitator who pursued excellence and continually found ways to save the division money, primarily in supply purchases.
"The procedures he established for maintaining our equipment added years to the life of some very expensive machines," Julian said.
Karkut also was like a father figure to the employees in the department. "He advised us not only in work-related areas, but on personal issues as well," Julian said. "He will be greatly missed."
