The Society for Biomaterials has selected Dr. C. Mauli Agrawal, orthopaedics, to be secretary-treasurer of the group beginning in 2003. He will serve as secretary-treasurer-elect until that time. Dr. Agrawal was elected through mail balloting of the members, who come from more than 30 countries.

The Society for Biomaterials, based in Minneapolis but incorporated in San Antonio in 1974, is the world's premier and largest group of scientists, engineers and physicians in the field of implant materials. "I look forward to working in this capacity on the board," Dr. Agrawal said. "The most enjoyable part will be the opportunity to meet and work with people from all over the world."

Dr. Agrawal served as program chair for the society's 2001 annual meeting, where about 700 talks and papers were presented. He will be in charge of a budget exceeding several million dollars per annum. He is director of UTHSC's Center for Clinical Bioengineering.
