Weight Watchers program begins Oct. 2

Weight Watchers begins a new session on Tuesday, Oct. 2. Meetings will be held at noon every Tuesday in the University Hospital Cafeteria Optimist Room.

Travel Fair 2001 scheduled for Oct. 11

Business travelers and prospective vacationers are invited to the Travel Fair 2001 to be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, in the auditorium foyer. The event, sponsored by UTHSCís travel services office and the Health Science Centerís designated travel agency, Corporate Travel Planners Inc., will feature representatives from Corporate Travel and the universityís travel services office, as well as the travel program administrator from the UT System. Travel Fair vendors include American Classic Voyages, Carnival and Disney Cruise Lines, Holland America, Funjet Vacations, Candlewood Suites, Marriott Courtyard, Omni Hotel and Westin Hotels, as well as the Advantage, Avis and Enterprise rental car agencies.

More than 700 faculty, staff and students attended last yearís fair to learn about Health Science Center travel procedures and to find great travel deals. Door prizes include airline tickets, car rentals and hotel stays.

Auction of surplus, obsolete equipment is Oct. 13

Health Science Center employees are invited to the Auction of Surplus/Obsolete Property to be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, in the general services warehouse. Items include medical equipment, shelving, desks, typewriters and calculators.

Employees can view items before the auction from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, and from 8 to 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13. Auction items may be transferred free of charge to any UTHSC department through Friday, Oct. 5.

5K Walk for Brain Cancer set for Oct. 13

The South Texas Brain Cancer Foundationís first 5K Walk for Brain Cancer will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at the UTHSC running track. The goal of the walk is to raise funds for patient education, research and support groups and to assist patients with the financial burden of costly medications.

Dr. Pamela New, assistant professor of medicine, along with family members of brain cancer patients, created The South Texas Brain Cancer Foundation this year in an effort to raise awareness in San Antonio about the disease.

Registration for the walk is $20 and can be done until the day of the event. For more information or to register, call 670-0204.


Walk to 'D-Feet' ALS Oct. 13

The South Texas ALS Association Chapter will hold its 5K Walk to D-Feet ALS event at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, on the campus of the University of the Incarnate Word, 4301 Broadway. Registration begins at 9 a.m.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrigís Disease, is a disorder causing progressive loss of control of voluntary muscles due to a destruction of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. ALS affects approximately one out of 100,000 people. It appears in some cases to run in families. The disorder affects men more often than women. Symptoms usually do not develop until adulthood, often not until after age 50.

Department of orthopaedics cooks up Oct. 18 fund-raiser

No need to cook — dinner is ready! The department of orthopaedics is sponsoring a traditional Cajun dinner from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18. All proceeds will go to the State Employee Charitable Campaign (SECC).

For $10, students, faculty and staff can order a spicy Cajun meal created by the Acadiana Café. Each plate will be piled with chicken and sausage gumbo, jambalaya, green beans, a dinner roll and bread pudding. The meals will be pre-packaged and ready for pick-up at the Medical School courtyard.

All dinners must be pre-paid and pre-ordered. To place an order, call ext. 7-2023 or send an e-mail to kellerl@uthscsa.edu. The deadline to place an order is 4 p.m. Oct. 17.
