Teaching Excellence Course begins Oct. 9

Faculty members are invited to participate in the 25th annual UTHSC Teaching Excellence Course. The professional development program, sponsored by the educational research and development of informatics services division, will take place from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Oct. 9 through Dec. 13.

The course is conducted workshop-style so faculty can compare teaching experiences, exchange success stories and share lessons learned the "hard way." Participants practice classroom, clinical and seminar teaching and receive feedback on these methods from peers. They also will acquire experience with important teacher tasks such as evaluating student performance, planning courses, teaching psychomotor skills, intervening with challenging students and developing educational software.

More than 600 faculty members from all schools on campus have completed the course.

Faculty can register by contacting Elisa Rendon at ext. 7-2292, at fax number 7-2281 or at rendonm@uthscsa.edu. The course is free to UTHSC faculty.

For more information, contact Bill Hendricson at ext. 7-2813 or send an e-mail to hendricson@uthscsa.edu.

Volunteers needed for Science Expo 2001

Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to help with this year's Science Expo. Hundreds of high school students, parents, teachers and counselors from San Antonio and the surrounding area will be on campus from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, to learn about opportunities and programs at the Health Science Center.

Assistance is needed with presentations, display tables and general "crowd control." The goal of the expo is to promote the importance of science education and the Health Science Center as a resource for the community.

For more information or to sign up to volunteer, call Dr. Irene Chapa at ext. 7-3941.
