Investiture of Dr. Cigarroa to be held Sept. 7
History will be made at the Health Science Center in September, and the university community is invited to be a part of it. At 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 7, in the auditorium, Dr. Francisco G. Cigarroa will be officially installed as the third president of the Health Science Center.
Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to share in the proud moment when members of The University of Texas System Board of Regents present Dr. Cigarroa with the presidential medallion as a symbol of his leadership. The event will feature an academic procession including faculty from each school, a presentation of colors and music for the grand occasion.
Guests will include community and civic leaders, elected officials, other university presidents, Health Science Center donors, and students from San Antonio and the South Texas/Border Region.
Large viewing screens and sound systems will be placed in the auditorium and foyer so that all guests, no matter where they are seated, can see and hear the ceremony. A reception will follow in the auditorium courtyard.
Immediately prior to his appointment as president, Dr. Cigarroa served as director of pediatric surgery and director of abdominal organ transplantation.
He took office on Oct. 16, 2000, succeeding Dr. John P. Howe, III, who served as president for 16 years. Dr. Cigarroa is the first Hispanic in the United States to lead a health science university.
