Faculty win CREF awards
Drs. Mark Shapiro, assistant professor in the department of physiology, and Paula Shireman, assistant professor in the department of surgery, have been awarded support for their research from the Health Science Center's Competitive Research Enhancement Fund (CREF).
Dr. Shapiro received a $49,999 grant for his research project "Modulation of KCNQ Potassium Channels." Dr. Shireman received $50,000 for her project "The Role of MCP-1 Inactivation in a Mouse Model of Hind Limb Ischemia." The two researchers were chosen from 14 applicants.
The CREF was established at the Health Science Center in 1998 by the institutional strategic research planning committee. The fund provides venture capital for new faculty serving at the assistant professor level who have the potential to obtain federal, private or research grants within three years of receiving CREF support.
