Dental School names Thomas associate dean
Dr. D. Denee Thomas has been named associate dean for student affairs in the Dental School. Her appointment by Dr. Kenneth Kalkwarf, dean, was effective June 1.
Dr. Thomas, a faculty member in the periodontics department since 1991, fills the position held for the past few months by Dr. Joe Berrong, chairman of general dentistry, who acted as interim associate dean.
"We are delighted to have Denee move into this important leadership position," Dr. Kalkwarf said. "In addition to running an active research program in microbiology, Denee has been a popular instructor in both predoctoral and postdoctoral courses.
"I would also like to thank Joe Berrong for his admirable service over these past few months," the dean added.
Dr. Thomas has been a leader in the Dental School's student research program and has served as adviser to the San Antonio Chapter of the American Association for Dental Research Student Group for the past three years.
She has been a member of the school's admissions committee since 1992 and the admissions review panel since 1995. During 2000-2001, Dr. Thomas was selected as a fellow in the American Dental Education Association's Leadership Institute.
"I am both excited and honored to have the opportunity to serve as a student advocate, and to explore new avenues for improving dental education," Dr. Thomas said.
Dr. Thomas earned her Ph.D. from Creighton University in Omaha, Neb. She held postdoctoral fellowships in microbiology at the Health Science Center and at The University of California at Los Angeles. Prior to joining the Dental School faculty, she was on the microbiology and immunology faculty at Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston- Salem, N.C.
