Live broadcast to feature experts on asthma

The Academic Center for Evidence-Based Nursing and the American Lung Association will sponsor a live, interactive satellite broadcast titled "Asthma: A Public Health Response," at noon Thursday, May 17, in Room 1.463 in the School of Nursing. Experts in asthma physiology, surveillance and prevention will discuss the burden of asthma in the United States, how to overcome it and the resources available to implement asthma education programs in school districts throughout the country.

Cost is $30 payable upon arrival to the broadcast. Continuing education credits will be offered. Register by logging on to or call Shannon Schreiber at ext. 7-1480. Course materials must be downloaded from the Web site.

Critical care medicine topic of lecture May 17

The university community is invited to the 18th Annual Fritz Holmstrom Memorial Lecture in Critical Care Medicine, "Recent Advances and New Challenges in the Care of Critically Injured Patients" at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, May 17, in Room 309L. Dr. Basil Pruitt, clinical professor in the department of surgery at the Health Science Center, will be the guest speaker. A reception will follow.

The event is sponsored by the UTHSC department of anesthesiology in conjunction with the division of thoracic surgery and the San Antonio Society of Anesthesiologists.

International program to feature Switzerland

Learn fascinating facts about Switzerland during the UTHSC International Alliance "International Evening" program to be held at 7 p.m. Friday, May 18, in the Dental School cafeteria. Dr. Stefano Bachman, medicine/division of infectious diseases, and his wife, Evelyne, both of Zurich, will be the presenters. An international food tasting will feature foods from around the world.

Geriatric care to be discussed at conference

The 12th Annual Summer Intensive in Geriatrics and Gerontology, "Exploring Clinical Advances in Geriatric Care," will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 4-8. The location is television production services, room 2.457T, Dental School Building. Continuing education and continuing medical education credit is available.

Event sponsors are the South Texas Geriatric Education Center; the UTHSC Medical School and School of Nursing; and the San Antonio Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center, South Texas Veterans Health Care System, Audie L. Murphy Division.

Honor friend with a book

Looking for a way to honor a colleague in your department who is retiring? Why not purchase a book in his or her honor? The Briscoe Library is accepting donations to purchase new books for its book stacks. When a donation is made to the library to purchase a book in someone's honor, a bookplate with the honoree's name, department and number of years of service to the UTHSC is placed inside the front cover of the book.

Donations to honor family members for outstanding accomplishments or to memorialize the death of a loved one also are accepted.
