Med/Ed students pay visit

Photo of students with heart model

Jose Garza of Roma High School in the Rio Grande Valley examines a heart model during a recent campus visit of 90 Med/Ed program participants. Esmerelda Blanco of Med High in Mercedes is seated next to Garza. Med/Ed, a program coordinated by the Health Science Center, is geared to teens who indicate interest in science and health professions. Activities prepare the young people for college admissions testing and essay writing, core academic courses, internships, community service and more. Garza, Blanco and other students heard a lecture on the cardiovascular system from Dr. Frank Weaker, cellular and structural biology. He tested students' understanding of the heart and its functions and exhibited a pacemaker during the interesting session. Other sessions focused on the brain, newborn care, forensic pathology and other topics. Garza's brother, Gabriel, will begin his studies in the UTHSC Dental School starting this fall. Dr. Mario Ramirez, vice president for South Texas/Border Initiatives, accompanied the students on their tour of the Health Science Center.
