Faculty, students attend NHMA conference

First-year medical students Robert Brown (left) and Francis Ali-Osman (right) join Dr. Francisco G. Cigarroa, Health Science Center president, at the National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA) Fifth Annual Conference, "Healthy Hispanic Families," held March 22-25 in Washington, D.C. Drs. Juan Nieto, Leo Vela and Martha Medrano, and medical students Jose Hernandez, Cheryl Vera-Burkhalter, Gerardo Ortiz, Virginia Oliva, Monica Ramos, Vanessa Bernal, Cynthia Vega and Valerie Chavez, also participated. Dr. Cigarroa led a presentation on the National Network of Latin American Medical Students and was honored as the first Hispanic president of a health science center in the Continental United States. Drs. Medrano and Salvador Contreras are on the NHMA National Advisory Committee that helped plan the meeting.
