Dr. David Espino, family practice, recently was appointed to the National Institute on Aging (NIA) National Advisory Council. This panel provides direction to the NIA director regarding NIA initiatives and NIA-funded research. A major responsibility of the position is to certify that the research review committees have made the correct choices in selecting grant proposals for funding. "Members are from the public Hugh Downs just stepped down from this committee and from academia," Dr. Espino said.

William Hendricson, office of educational resources/division of educational research and development, presented the keynote address at the Assessment 2000 Conference sponsored by the University of Indiana. Faculty and administrators from 300 higher education institutions attended the Nov. 6-7 conference. The title of the keynote presentation was "Competency-Based Assessment in Health Professions Education." Hendricson provides academic informatics services on campus.

Congratulations and a salute to Yolanda Montes, accounting, who re-enlisted in the U.S. Navy at halftime of the San Antonio Spurs' Dec. 7 home game against the New York Knicks. The installation was held in conjunction with the 59th anniversary of the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. The Spurs' own Admiral, 7-1 center David Robinson, is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
