In Memoriam

Dr. Shirley Ruth Graffam, former professor in the School of Nursing, died June 20 at age 77 from complications associated with pneumonia. Dr. Graffam joined the faculty in 1975 and retired in 1990. She was the first full professor in the School of Nursing.

Dr. Graffam was dedicated to improving the care of patients with pain. Her work as a pioneer in pain education and nursing research continues to be cited in current pain publications.

Her contributions to nursing science and pain management are recognized and valued. Her publications and the courses she developed continue to support and improve pain management in the clinical setting.

Dr. Graffam volunteered her time and money for the care of animals. Any memorial contributions should be made to Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Inc., P.O. Box 1157, Boerne, Texas 78006, or the Animal Defense League/SPCA, 11300 Nacogdoches, San Antonio, Texas 78217.
