Picture od student taking blood sample

Thirty-five students from several Laredo high schools recently spent an activity-filled five days at the Health Science Center learning about health care practices. The students were part of the Summer Biomedical Program sponsored by the South Texas/Border Initiative. Here, Stephanie Rodriguez (left) and Tatiana Cordova practice blood drawing techniques on a plastic arm in the teaching clinic at the School of Nursing. The arm contains plastic tubes that feel remarkably like real veins and are filled with red-colored water that the students can actually draw out with a syringe.
