One of only 10 American College of Surgeons Faculty Research Fellowships for 2000 has been awarded to Dr. Alexander R. Miller, surgery. Dr. Miller will receive a $35,000 grant for two years toward his project, "Molecular Characterization of DNA Damaging Agents on Transcriptional and Apoptotic Signaling in Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma." The fellowships are offered to surgeons who are entering academic careers.

Dr. E. Phyllis Bowie, cellular and structural biology, was recognized by the Dental School class of 2003 as Freshman Class Professor of the Year with its DSA Award 1999-2000.

Teresa Hines, associate director of HETCAT (the Health Education Training Centers Alliance of Texas), has been invited to serve on the federal Advisory Committee on Interdisciplinary, Community-Based Linkages, a panel of the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration.
