Why Health Care Doesn’t Always Yield Health
Nursing research and practice should answer the question, “Why doesn’t the social environment of health care always yield health?” To understand the answer to this question, we have to see things we cannot see without being with people where they live and work. To render unbiased, safe, and health-promoting care, we need to know the people for whom we provide care.

Spotlight On
A graduate student teams up with an undergraduate student to conduct a screening and counseling on how to remain active, healthy and manage chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, arthritis and depression that are common in the elderly.
Community Service Learning: Health Screenings and Health Education for Elders
In this example of community service learning, faculty and students spent one year providing health screenings and health education at various senior centers in San Antonio. The goals were (1) to help these community-dwelling elders maintain their health and decrease various health risks associated with aging, (2) to allow nursing students to enhance their appreciation of elders’ health-related values and attitudes, and (3) to improve their geriatric nursing skills.
