Residency Program Director’s Welcome

 
 

The Neurology Residency program at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio is fully accredited by the ACGME. We provide a superb educational experience in a wonderfully supportive environment for our neurology trainees. Our faculty members are devoted teachers, clinicians, and researchers. We work closely with other disciplines including neuro-ophthalmology, neurosurgery, neuropathology, neuroradiology, psychiatry and many others to provide a broad scope of expertise to our neurology residents.

 

The educational purpose of our program is to provide an environment that promotes clinical excellence, scholarship, professional behavior, stimulates self-directed life-long learning and develops the qualities of a compassionate physician. We work closely with other services to maximize flexibility of choice and provide an opportunity to evaluate and learn about a wide range of neurological problems to include inpatient and outpatient experiences. In addition there are expert experiences in acute management of neurological emergencies, non-emergent visits, and intensive care unit (ICU) patient management. There are many educational opportunities including our city wide Neurological Sciences Grand Rounds, San Antonio Neuropathology CPC, Morning Report, regularly scheduled neuroradiology and neuro-ophthalmology conferences, Basic Science Conferences, and a resident didactic lecture series. There are many opportunities for participation in research activities from basic science laboratory research to clinical trials with faculty mentors.

 

The purpose of the training program is to prepare the residents for the independent practice of clinical neurology. This is based on supervised clinical work with increasing responsibilities for outpatients and inpatients. Upon completion of our program residents are equipped with the skills necessary for excellence in either an academic or private practice career. The goal of training our residents to become excellent clinical neurologists includes demonstrating the following standards of performance prior to completing our residency program:

 
  • Core knowledge in the neurological sciences basic to understanding of health and well being, diseases, disease processes and treatment.
  • Basic skills in clinical neurological assessment including medical interviewing and physical examination in a diverse patient population.
  • The application of knowledge and clinical assessment skills for appropriate interpretation of neurological data, clinical judgment and decision making.
  • Core knowledge of systems of healthcare.
  • Skills in self-directed learning and critical thinking to foster a commitment to life-long learning.
  • Behavior that reflects professionalism, humanism, and ethical principles.
  • Interactions that reflect compassion and respect for the privacy, dignity, and diversity of patients and their families
  • Interactions that reflect professionalism and respect for colleagues and other members of the healthcare team.
