Department of Neurology
I am pleased to welcome you to our website as the founding chair of the Department of Neurology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. The Department of Neurology has a rich academic, research, clinical service environment. We are proud of our service to the residents of South Texas and of our contributions to clinical research and the education of physicians.
Education: We offer outstanding ACGME accredited Neurology Residency and Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship training programs as well as training in Epilepsy, Neuromuscular Diseases, Cerebrovascular Diseases, and Neuroscience Research.
Research: Faculty in the Department of Neurology has received over $50 million in NIH research funding since 2001. This figure is greater than any other Department of Neurology in Texas. Neurology faculty has participated in multiple clinical trials involving stroke, neuromuscular diseases, neuro-oncology, neuroimmunology, and epilepsy. We are most proud that our faculty has been lead investigators in a number of landmark clinical trials.
Clinical Service: Our clinical partners include the University Health System, the South Texas Veteran’s Health Care System, Audie L. Murphy Division, and the Baptist Health System. We also enjoy a close relationship with the San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC) comprised of Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) and Wilford Hall Medical Center (WHMC), which provides high quality medical care to active duty and retired military personnel and their families. Together, these medical facilities provide outstanding care to the residents of Central and South Texas while providing a diversity of patients and a supportive environment in which to train physicians.
The Department of Neurology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio has a long tradition of excellence in neurological education, research and service to patients with neurological disorders. Our Department began as the Division of Neurology within the Department of Medicine. Over time, the Division grew from four faculty members to 16 neurologists, laying the foundation for the creation of the Department of Neurology in 2007.
In December 2009, we relocated our administrative and faculty offices to the 8th floor of the Medical Arts and Research Center (MARC). The MARC, located at 8300 Floyd Curl Drive, is the new home of our UT Medicine multispecialty faculty practice group, the largest multispecialty group practice in San Antonio.
Please take the time to explore our website and learn more about the Department of Neurology. We are here to answer any questions you may have and look forward to getting to know each other.
