Mission

Beatriz M. Hicks, MA

Clinical assistant professor of dental hygiene
1986 School of Allied Health Sciences graduate

"Even when I was attending school here, I knew I wanted to teach," said Hicks. "I had excellent role models within the dental hygiene program who encouraged me to continue my education."

After earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in higher education, she returned to the Health Science Center in 1990 as a faculty member and soon began chairing the student recruitment committee. Over the years dental hygiene has expanded from a certificate program to a department that includes a bachelor’s and a master’s program.

"The faculty are wonderful about volunteering their time to promote our programs among prospective students," Hicks added. "We were the first in Texas to introduce a master of science degree in dental hygiene, one of only nine such programs in the United States. The reputation of the Dental School, as #1 in the nation, also serves to enhance our program."
