Sally S. Atherton, PhD

Professor and interim chairman of
cellular & structural biology
1979 Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences graduate

"I have had several mentors who taught me many things, and it is a pleasure for me to share my knowledge with others," Dr. Atherton commented. "It would be difficult to determine if my first love is teaching or research. However, in research, I am drawn to pathogenesis because there always seems to be a new problem or challenge to solve.

"I am not a boundary person," Dr. Atherton added. "So much in science crosses over. The big challenge facing scientists today is interdisciplinary. We must maintain some departmental boundaries to function, but we must also be flexible since many of us share funding in research and have shared credits with our work."
