Academic Building - Laredo

LAREDO
Academic Building

March 2007

Location: 1937 Bustamante St.
Expected completion: October 2007
Size: 28,961 square feet
Cost: $12.7 million

Ingredients for success:

This is the second Health Science Center Laredo Campus Extension building. The Academic Building will expand classroom and distance learning facilities and will house a health-related library to serve not only health care practitioners and health professions students, but consumers as well. Programs to be expanded include: respiratory care, occupational therapy, dentistry, dental hygiene and environmental medicine. The School of Nursing also will begin a program to enable Laredos licensed vocational nurses to get their bachelor of science in nursing degrees and become registered nurses.

The new building will provide expanded opportunities for the South Texas Environmental Education and Research Program (STEER), which has offered intensive four-week rotations for students in Laredo for 10 years; for the Med/Ed program, which directs young people to primarily medical and dental careers; and for the Health Careers Opportunities Program (HCOP) that directs youngsters to all health careers.
