Presidentís Council Makes Possible New Endowed Chairs

are the new President's Council
endowed chairs.

More than 200 distinguished philanthropists joined President Cigarroa for the annual luncheon and awards program of the Health Science Centerís Presidentís Council and Development Board. Dr. Cigarroa made several announcements demonstrating the generosity of the 400-member Presidentís Council, including the creation of the new endowed chairs listed below.

Robert Campbell Jr., M.D.
Professor in the department of orthopaedics

Dr. Campbell was awarded the new Presidentís Council Chair for Excellence in Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Campbell invented the Vertical Expandable Prosthetic Titanium Rib to save the lives of children whose rib and spine abnormalities do not allow normal lung growth. Families come from around the world to San Antonio, where Dr. Campbell has performed 210 titanium rib implants at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Childrenís Hospital. He serves as director of the hospitalís Thoracic Institute. In 2004 the Titanium Rib became the first truly new spine deformity treatment to gain FDA approval since 1962.

Mary MacDougall, Ph.D.
Associate dean for research in the Dental School and professor of pediatric dentistry

Dr. MacDougall is the new Presidentís Council Chair for Excellence in Dental Research. Her research of tooth regeneration is considered to be pioneering. See related story, "Scientist signals for stem cell studies".
