The Health Science Center and the department of rehabilitation medicine pay special tribute to Andrew Gitter, M.D., who died in a traffic accident on April 29.
He had served as an associate professor in rehabilitation medicine since February 1997.
In 1999 Dr. Gitter was honored as the Health Science Center’s department of rehabilitation medicine Faculty Teacher of the Year. He was the chief of rehabilitation medicine at the South Texas Veterans Health Care System, Audie Murphy Division (VA), and also served on the staff of the Reeves Rehabilitation Center at University Hospital. He was actively involved with prosthetic research and was known worldwide for his expertise in gait analysis. Dr. Gitter established the first gait analysis laboratory at the VA. He had an active medical practice and was particularly revered by his patients from the amputee clinic.
Dr. Gitter was the consummate physician, teacher, researcher, husband, father and friend. He will be missed by all those who respected and loved him. He is survived by his wife, Brenda, and their daughters, Anna Caitlin, Maria Sofya Catherine and Yulia Katrina.
