If you were looking for Chiufang H. Hwang, M.D., in 1992, you probably would have found her buried beneath a stack of books.
"I was a library worm back then," Dr. Hwang said. If you were looking for her today, you’d want to pick up the Dallas Morning News or flip through a few channels on your television set.
The 1992 School of Medicine graduate is a psychiatrist, a wife, a mother of two, a special events planner, a public relations specialist, a commercial/print model and a featured guest in television commercials. To say she’s "on the go" is a bit of an understatement.
Dr. Hwang lives in Dallas, where she’s had the opportunity to work as a social conduit and events planner for Bill Blass Outerwear, an internationally recognized fashion label. She also has done public relations for Saks Fifth Avenue and currently is working with Haldane, an executive career management firm, and the Hedge Funds Care/Mike Modano Foundation.
You might also find her pulling stomach crunches with Chuck Norris and Christie Brinkley – she did the abdomen portion of the Total Gym infomercial. If you didn’t catch the commercials, perhaps you spotted her on the news. KDAF, KTVT and KXAS, the Warner Brothers, CBS and NBC stations in Dallas/Fort Worth, all featured Dr. Hwang in their newscasts. IBM Global used her in a computer commercial.
Exhausted? Not Dr. Hwang. "This stems from my early childhood. Because English was not the first language for my parents, I viewed every document, such as apartment leases and job applications, that went through the household,"
Dr. Hwang said. "Functioning as a child-parent made me realize that opportunities in life only happen once, and when they do, I go at it 150 percent."
Dr. Hwang completed her psychiatry residency at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and a fellowship at the UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.
