Hanna E. Abboud, M.D., has been named the Jay H. Stein Endowed Chair in Nephrology. Dr. Abboud is a professor and chief of the division of nephrology at the Health Science Center. His research focuses on the pathogenic mechanisms involved in the development and progression of renal disease.
Juan Parra, M.D., M.P.H., will serve as the new associate director of the Hispanic Center of Excellence in the School of Medicine. Dr. Parra is an associate professor in the department of pediatrics. "I am very excited and proud to have been appointed to this position," Dr. Parra said. "I will work hard to give other individuals the opportunities that I have had in my career."
Bettie Sue Masters, Ph.D., the Robert A. Welch Foundation Chair in Chemistry in the department of biochemistry, has received one of the highest honors in the field of science - selection as Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). She joined other distinguished U.S. scientists at the induction ceremony in February. The AAAS represents more than 138,000 scientists worldwide and 275 affiliated societies. AAAS conducts many programs in the areas of science policy, science education and international scientific cooperation, and publishes the prestigious peer-reviewed journal Science.
Martha A. Medrano, M.D., began a five-year term on the National Institutes of Health's (NIH) Advisory Committee on Research of Women's Health. Dr. Medrano is also director of the Hispanic Center of Excellence at the Health Science Center School of Medicine. Her participation will assist the NIH Office of Research on Women's Health to better address scientific, legal and ethical issues affecting the health of the nation's women. The office is mandated by Congress to strengthen and enhance research related to diseases, disorders and conditions that affect women, and to ensure that research conducted and supported by NIH adequately addresses issues regarding women's health.
