Principal research interests
include innovative, rapid methods for microorganism detection and
identification, and for determining antimicrobial resistance properties. Recent
emphasis has included means for detection and characterization of antimicrobial
resistance mechanisms in Streptococcus pneumoniae. Current studies
include determining the antibiotic resistance of S. pneumoniae isolates
recovered during the Active Bacterial Core Surveillance program of the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention. The most resistant isolates from this
national surveillance program provide an opportunity to assess the potential
clinical utility of new, investigational antimicrobial agents.
