Hi, Welcome to the Med Ed website, my name is Lauren and I will be your tour guide for the day. For those of you who don’t know, the Med Ed program was designed for High School students, it’s here to show you the exciting opportunities the UT health center has to offer and most of all, help you plan and prepare your future. Go ahead and pick from one of the fields we have listed and… I will tell you a little bit more about it.

So, what do you know about becoming a health care professional? Have you ever worked alongside of one? Have you ever served your community? Ever visited a health science center? Ever talked with a medical student to learn what it is really like? Do you know how to present yourself as an attractive candidate for an admissions committee? Do you know what you need to do to prepare your mind for professional school? Simply ‘wanting’ something is not enough. As a student, it is important to take action and prepare yourself for your next step… that could be high school, college, or professional school. Wherever you are in your academic career and wherever you hope to end up in the health sciences, the Med Ed Program can help you.

The Med Ed Program exists to help you find out if a career in the health sciences is right for you. Med Ed offers information and guidance for students who are thinking about becoming doctors, nurses, dentists, allied health professionals, or researchers. Whatever your dream is… this program can help you figure it all out. Interested in learning more? Information is just a click away!

Do you know what allied health is? Allied health refers to the areas of health care that work in partnership with doctors, dentists, and nurses in caring for patients. The allied health professions include dental hygiene, dental lab technology, clinical lab science, occupational therapy, physical therapy, paramedics, physician assistant, and respiratory therapy. The possibilities are endless, and the health care team would not be complete without these awesome individuals.

Do you like to work with your hands? Do you have a vivid imagination? Are you able to visualize complex ideas in your head? All of these things are important to future dentists. If you have ever had a toothache, you know just how important having a good dentist is! Dentistry is a field in the health sciences that deals with people’s self esteem and first impression just as much as it does their health. In fact, there is a direct correlation between oral health and overall health, making dentists a crucial component of the health care team. If this interests you, The Med Ed Program can help!

Cardiology, oncology, anesthesiology… what are all of these ologies? What about pediatrics, surgery, or psychiatry? These are actually medical specialties. No matter what kind of doctor you want to be, the first step after college is medical school. If you are interested in becoming a doctor of any kind, Med Ed can help you figure out all the steps to making it happen.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to walk into an emergency room and find no one around to help? How much longer would you have to wait if the doctor carried all the responsibility in caring for a patient? What in the world would we do without nurses? There is not a single health care setting that does not require the presence of a good nurse. Have you ever thought about filling these shoes? If you have, we are here to help.

Do you find yourself asking ‘why’ a lot? Do you like solving problems? Are you someone who needs to know how things work and how they could work better? If so, a career as a scientist might be right for you. Scientists work in labs and find the answers to the big questions that doctors, nurses, dentists, and allied health professionals need to treat patients. They develop the techniques and treatments that are battling today’s most complex health concerns and are breaking new ground every day in curing some of the oldest diseases. If that sounds like something you might be interested in, let us know and we will help you get started.

When you join the Med Ed program, you will get the exciting opportunity to visit the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio where you will get a chance to meet with the professors and tour the medical facilities. There is also an annual reunion which happens once a year where both, high school students and college students get together for an evening of fun, food and games.

Applying for the Med Ed program is really simple. The Med Ed program is for high school students that live in the Laredo area or the Rio Grande Valley Area. If you go to school there, simply click on the sign me up button at the top right and fill out the form that corresponds with where you live.
