Two fellows from the Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program at the UT Health Science Center San Antonio have received the Young Investigators of the Year Award from the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM).
Benjamin Getter, D.O., and Wesam Aziz, M.D., were selected for the award based on their analysis of YouTube videos featuring information about palliative care, hospice and end-of-life care. The fellows presented their findings at the AAHPM annual assembly in March. Only 28 percent of videos rated as 'good'
Drs. Getter and Aziz reviewed 468 videos for useful and correct information about palliative care. They independently rated 133 (28 percent) as “good,” versus 335 (72 percent) others that they said provided incorrect information or were of poor quality.
In addition, with the continuous uploading of new videos to YouTube, many older but excellent videos are never seen. "This is of concern because although many high-quality videos have been produced, their poor exposure and low view counts make them difficult to find. The third page of Google search result might as well not exist, as few people make it that far before giving up and trying something else," Dr. Getter said.Best-rated videos based on scientific evidence
"We concluded that good or quality information in the videos was supported by evidence-based practice," Dr. Aziz added. "What we found was that even though good-quality videos were produced by educational institutions, they unfortunately did not necessarily translate into them being viewed more." Faculty mentors
Mentors for Drs. Aziz and Getter were School of Medicine faculty members Sandra Sanchez-Reilly, M.D., FAAHPM
, associate professor and director of the Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program; and Jeanette Ross, M.D.
, clinical associate professorand associate program director for the fellowship program. Shuko Lee, M.D., from the South Texas Veterans Health Care System is also named on the study. Drs. Sanchez-Reilly and Ross also hold positions with the South Texas Veterans Health Care System.Read more about the palliative care presentation here
