SAN ANTONIO (April 24, 2012) — The Baptist Health Foundation of San Antonio announced April 24 that it will provide $222,000 in scholarships for students at the UT Health Science Center San Antonio for the 2012-2013 academic year.

The scholarships will be available to students in 14 degree programs, including programs in the School of Medicine, Dental School, School of Nursing, School of Health Professions and students in the affiliated UT Austin College of Pharmacy program who are studying on the Health Science Center campus.

Scholarship luncheon
Meanwhile, a luncheon was held April 19 in the School of Nursing’s large galleria to celebrate the 58 scholarships totaling $215,000 that Baptist Health Foundation awarded to students for the current academic year.

Baptist Health Foundation scholarships have helped educate 10 physicians, 17 dentists, 83 health professionals, 87 nurses and 10 pharmacists since the foundation began awarding grants to the Health Science Center in 2005.

Commitment to education
Knowlton said the Baptist Health Foundation increased scholarship awards for the current academic year by 3 percent, even amid challenging economic times.

“You are making a clear, positive statement about education,” William L. Henrich, M.D., MACP, president of the Health Science Center, said as he thanked Knowlton and the Scholarship Committee members.

Scholarship recipients from the School of Nursing, School of Health Professions, School of Medicine, Dental School and College of Pharmacy stood to share brief reflections on the awards’ impact on their education.

“I’m living my dream,” Jason Rocha of the School of Medicine, a first-time recipient, said.

Odette Farias, an acute care nurse practitioner major who will graduate from the School of Nursing in May, said she had benefited from $10,000 in Baptist Health Foundation funding — four consecutive awards.
