UTHSC to announce endowment in honor of First Lady Anita Perry (5-31-01)
An endowment named for Anita Thigpen Perry, first lady of Texas, will support a new women’s and children’s health research center at Mrs. Perry’s alma mater – the School of Nursing at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
Gov. Rick Perry and Mrs. Perry will join university and community leaders including Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D., UTHSC president, who will announce the endowment at a luncheon in Mrs. Perry’s honor. The luncheon begins at noon Monday, June 4, at the La Cantera Westin Resort, 16641 La Cantera Parkway.
Anita Perry received the master of science in nursing degree from the School of Nursing in 1977 and has worked in numerous roles in the profession. The Anita Thigpen Perry Endowment will support the Center for Women’s and Children’s Health housed in the School of Nursing. The center will focus on improving the health of women and children in South Texas’ areas of greatest need, such as nutrition, cardiovascular disease, health education and early childhood development.
“Research conducted in the center will have a broad impact on the health of women and children – ensuring a healthier future for some of our most precious resources,” Dr. Cigarroa said.
During her 17-year career in nursing, Mrs. Perry served in numerous professional roles: supervisor of surgery, instructor and pediatric coordinator, staff nurse in an intensive care unit, instructor in medical surgical nursing, in-service director and childbirth education instructor, area supervisor of a home health agency, RN consultant and hospital director of nurses.
Mrs. Perry also will be named 2001 Distinguished Alumna of the School of Nursing.
