Public health course offered in Valley (4/15/97)

Health professionals, educators and students in the Rio Grande Valley are taking a special continuing education course in public health and epidemiology funded through the South Texas/Border Region Health Education Initiative.

The course is offered via interactive teleconferencing from San Antonio to sites in Brownsville and Harlingen. Brownsville has 20 registered students, and Harlingen has 28. The instructor is Al Holguin, MD, professor in the School of Public Health from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

Dr. Holguin is based in the school's branch at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. The class began in February, and will last for about three months. Other courses are being planned and will be announced at a later date, Dr. Holguin said.

The South Texas/Border Region initiative is a special project in health-care education.
