UTHSCSA appoints reproductive endocrinology expert as new chair

A physician named as one of the "Best Family Doctors in America" by Ladies' Home Journal will head The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio's (UTHSCSA) department of obstetrics and gynecology.

The UTHSCSA appointed Robert S. Schenken, M.D., as chairman of the department. Dr. Schenken is an internationally renowned expert in reproductive endocrinology and has published more than 250 peer-reviewed papers, chapters, books and abstracts. He will emphasize the department's research efforts while serving as chair.

"My predecessor, Carl J. Pauerstein, M.D., positioned our department well for the changes that lie ahead," Dr. Schenken said. "I plan to focus on enhancing the basic and clinical research activities of the department, while maintaining our excellent training programs and patient care services. I am looking forward to working with our dedicated faculty and staff."

In addition to his position at the Health Science Center, Dr. Schenken is president-elect of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, general program chair for the Eighth World Congress on Endometriosis, and member of the board of directors and examiner of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Ladies' Home Journal named him one of the "Best Family Doctors in America" in its May 2002 issue. Dr. Schenken received his medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
