Topic for the Hollan Lecture: back pain (2/26/98)

The first O. Roger Hollan, MD, Lecture will be presented Wednesday, March 11, during Medical Grand Rounds at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

Richard Deyo, MD, MPH, professor of medicine and health services at the University of Washington School of Medicine and the Seattle VA Medical Center, will discuss "Myths in the Management of Low Back Pain."

Dr. Deyo, a former resident and faculty member at the Health Science Center, will offer a presentation of interest to personnel in many different health care disciplines. A short question-and-answer session will follow.

He will touch on many topics, including the use of electrical stimulators to reduce low back pain. Drs. Deyo and Nicolas Walsh, MD, professor and chairman of rehabilitation medicine at the Health Science Center, published a study in the New England Journal of Medicine several years ago questioning electrical stimulators' effectiveness.

The Hollan Lecture is set for 8 a.m. March 11 in lecture hall 3.102B (near the Health Science Center's library). Dr. Deyo was invited by Andrew Diehl, MD, chief of the division of general medicine in the Health Science Center's department of medicine, who holds the O. Roger Hollan, MD, Professorship in Internal Medicine. Dr. Diehl also is assistant dean for primary care in the Medical School.

The $100,000 Hollan Professorship was created a year ago to honor the San Antonio physician's more than 40 years in practice.
