Drs. Francisco and Ricardo Cigarroa receive 2003 Laredo honor

In an unprecedented move, the Laredo Washington's Birthday Celebration Association (WBCA) changed the title of its prestigious annual award, Mr. South Texas, to honor two brothers as Misters South Texas 2003. They are Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D., president of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and his brother, Ricardo G. Cigarroa, M.D., a Laredo cardiologist and member of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

Dr. Francisco Cigarroa is a nationally renowned pediatric and transplant surgeon. He is the first Hispanic in the United States to lead a health science university.

Dr. Ricardo Cigarroa developed the first cardiac catheterization laboratory at Laredo's Mercy Hospital and established the Laredo Medical Foundation.

Since 1952, the WBCA has awarded Mr. South Texas to individuals dedicated to improving the lives of others and to contributing to the growth of South Texas. The Cigarroas will accept their honor at the 106th Mr. South Texas Luncheon February 22, 2003, in Laredo, their hometown.
