Childhood injury, safety topics of conference Sept. 26-27
The graphic video recently seen across the nation of a mother allegedly beating her child in a department store parking lot is a reminder of one of the many ways children are injured every day. Childhood injury prevention is the topic of the Third Annual Childhood Injury Prevention Conference to be held Sept. 26 and 27 at the Adam's Mark San Antonio Riverwalk Hotel, 111 E. Pecan St.
Although "Teens on the Road: Strategies for Injury Prevention" is the theme for the conference, experts from across Texas will present on a variety of state-of-the-art youth injury prevention programs. Seminars will focus on injury epidemiology, public policy, advocacy and implementation, and evaluation of injury prevention. Juan Parra, M.D., associate professor of pediatrics at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, will be a presenter during a 1 p.m. breakout session on Thursday, Sept. 26. Dr. Parra will discuss "Injury Prevention in Primary Care."
"It is vital that pediatricians and all health care providers provide injury prevention counseling to their patients," Dr. Parra said. "Most medical schools do not incorporate anticipatory guidance training into their curriculums, but at the Health Science Center we emphasize this aspect for our pediatric residents and medical students. Knowledge about injury prevention varies among families," he said. "My workshop at this conference will enhance health care providers' knowledge of injury prevention issues."
State Sen. Judith Zaffirini will be the keynote speaker.
