Professor to head immunological study section (11/24/97)

Anthony J. Infante, MD, professor of pediatrics and microbiology at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, has been invited to chair the immunological sciences study section of the Center for Scientific Review at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Members of NIH study sections provide peer review of projects nationwide and are selected on the basis of demonstrated competence and achievement in their field. Membership on a study section represents a major commitment of professional time and energy as well as a unique opportunity to contribute to national biomedical research efforts.

Dr. Infante has been on the Health Science Center faculty since 1983. He earned both his MD and PhD from Indiana University and was a resident and research fellow at the Mayo Foundation in Rochester, Minn. He was also a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford University Medical Center prior to joining the Health Science Center faculty.

Dr. Infante's research has focused on understanding the role of T lymphocytes in controlling immune responses in autoimmune diseases, particularly myasthenia gravis. He is also interested in the development of the immune system in newborns and congenital immune deficiency diseases.
