Atherton elected to board of vision research group (9-23-99)

Sally S. Atherton, Ph.D., professor of cellular and structural biology, microbiology and ophthalmology at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, was elected to represent the Immunology/Microbiology Section on the Board of Trustees of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.

Dr. Atherton has held continuous support from the National Institutes of Health since 1983 and has published numerous chapters and peer-reviewed articles. Her research uses animal models to explore the origination and development of eye and brain infections caused by members of the herpes virus family.

Dr. Atherton recently returned from the University of Iowa College of Medicine, where she spent January to August 1999 as the inaugural Helen C. Levitt Endowed Professor. She taught in the dental gross anatomy course, mirroring her duties at the Health Science Center, and conducted research of virology in a pediatric infectious diseases laboratory.
