Experts to debate pros, cons of health care technology transfer (2-23-01)

The former editor of one of the nation’s most prestigious medical journals and the president of a Texas biosciences institute will engage in two debates Wednesday, March 7, at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

Jerome P. Kassirer, M.D., editor-in-chief emeritus of The New England Journal of Medicine, and Tom Kowalski, president of the Texas Healthcare and Biosciences Institute, will discuss “The Promise and Peril of Academy-Industry Relations” as part of the Texas Medical Foundation Ethics Lectureship. The presenters will speak from 8 to 9 a.m. in room 409L of the Medical School building and from 4 to 5 p.m. in lecture hall 3.102B near the Health Science Center’s Dolph Briscoe, Jr., Library. Both sessions will have similar content. The public is invited.

Today’s health professionals and researchers face ethical dilemmas caused by conflicts between professional responsibility and personal profit. Dr. Kassirer, a distinguished professor at the Tufts University School of Medicine and a senior research scientist at Yale, will present the perspective of the academic researcher. Mr. Kowalski will provide his views as a technology transfer executive. Community physicians may obtain continuing education credit for attending.

For more information, call (210) 567-2570. The lecture is coordinated by the Health Science Center’s Center for Ethics and the Humanities in Health Care.
