UTHSC's Medrano named to federal women's health panel
(1-23-02)

Martha A. Medrano, M.D., director of the Medical Hispanic Center of Excellence at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, has been appointed to the National Institutes of Health's (NIH's) Advisory Committee on Research of Women's Health. Her five-year term begins Feb. 1.

Her participation will assist the NIH Office of Research on Women's Health to better address scientific, legal and ethical issues affecting the health of the nation's women. The office is mandated by Congress to strengthen and enhance research related to diseases, disorders and conditions that affect women, and to ensure that research conducted and supported by NIH adequately addresses issues regarding women's health.

"I look forward to my term on this very important committee and hope that I can contribute to improving the health of all women, but in particular those in San Antonio and South Texas," Dr. Medrano said.

The office also ensures that women are adequately represented in biomedical and biobehavioral research studies supported by NIH. Its final mandate is to develop opportunities and support for recruitment, retention, re-entry and advancement of women in biomedical careers.

Dr. Medrano is an associate professor of psychiatry in the School of Medicine. In her role with the Hispanic Center of Excellence, she is working to improve recruitment and retention of Hispanic medical students and other minority groups, including women.
