First master of occupational therapy class graduates Saturday

The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSC) will confer degrees this weekend to members of the first class of its master of occupational therapy program. Fifteen graduates will receive master of occupational therapy degrees at the School of Allied Health Sciences commencement exercises at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 25, at Trinity University's Laurie Auditorium, 715 Stadium Drive.

UTHSC is one of only two institutions in Texas to offer a master of occupational therapy degree. Occupational therapists help people of all ages achieve a better quality of life by teaching them how to perform functional activities in daily living to promote overall wellness.

Another first for the School of Allied Health Sciences is the graduation of Melissa Nedry, who will be the inaugural second-generation graduate from the clinic laboratory sciences department. Nedry's father, Michael, earned a bachelor of science degree from UTHSC and The University of Texas at San Antonio in 1982. After graduation, Melissa will work in University Hospital's immunology/virology lab.

The School of Allied Health Sciences is one of five UTHSC schools and encompasses the departments of clinical laboratory sciences, dental hygiene, dental laboratory sciences, emergency medical technology, occupational therapy, physician assistant studies, physical therapy and respiratory care.
