Nearly 700 to receive degrees at UT Health Science Center

San Antonio (May 22, 2003) — Catherine DeAngelis, M.D., M.P.H., editor of the Journal of the American Medical Association, and San Antonio Mayor Ed Garza are among the invited speakers May 23-24 for the 2003 commencement ceremonies of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSC).

Nearly 700 students will receive degrees and certificates from the School of Medicine, Dental School, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, School of Nursing and School of Allied Health Sciences. Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D., UTHSC president, will confer the degrees, along with University of Texas System Regent Judith L. Craven, M.D., who will confer the degrees at the School of Medicine exercise.

Dr. DeAngelis is the speaker for the School of Medicine; Mayor Garza will address the Dental School.

One family will have even more to cheer about. During the School of Medicine commencement, Summer Youker, M.D., a 1998 alumna of the UTHSC, will present the M.D. diploma to her mother, Marsha Griffin. Dr. Youker practices in Worcester, Mass.

The School of Nursing is bestowing degrees on 127 recipients who will help alleviate the region's shortage of nurses and nursing faculty members. The School of Allied Health Sciences is sending 213 graduates into booming job markets for allied health professionals such as respiratory therapists, clinical laboratory scientists and emergency medical technicians. The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences is conferring 45 advanced degrees (the Ph.D. and M.S.) on students who have gained mastery of an area through a rigorous course of study, including preparation of a doctoral dissertation or master's thesis. The School of Medicine is sending 193 physicians into medical practice and the Dental School is conferring degrees on 97 dentists, many of whom will practice in South Texas. (Graduation statistics were as of mid-May.)
