UTHSC dean chairs Commission on Dental Accreditation

San Antonio (Aug. 22, 2003) — Kenneth L. Kalkwarf, D.D.S., dean of the Dental School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, recently was elected chair of the Commission on Dental Accreditation, the national accrediting body for postsecondary dental and dental-related education programs.

Dr. Kalkwarf served as vice chair this past year and will chair the commission until 2004. His leadership has played an important role in the Dental School's research excellence since his appointment as dean in 1988. The school operates an active outpatient clinic within the Health Science Center and provides millions of dollars of discounted and uncompensated dental care through partnerships in the region. Dr. Kalkwarf has served on a broad array of regional and national committees and task forces.

The commission, established in 1975, is nationally recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. It develops and approves accreditation standards, makes accreditation decisions on educational programs, and develops and approves procedures used in the accreditation process. It is structured to include an appropriate representation of the communities of interest.
