$20,000 donation to the Health Science Center (6/24/97)

The San Antonio branch of the international civic organization Sembradores de Amistad ("sowers of friendship") has donated $20,000 to The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio for creation of a student scholarship fund.

The contribution will help establish the Club Sembradores de Amistad de San Antonio Scholarship Endowment. The endowment will award a scholarship each year to help pay tuition and fees for a disadvantaged medical student entering the second year of medical school.

"The nonprofit Sembradores de Amistad was created in 1961 to promote friendship, ethics, understanding and civic progress," said Ricardo A. Salinas, chairman of the education/finance committee for the San Antonio branch of the organization.

"We have provided this new scholarship for students who have come from a low-income family and have exceptional financial need, or who have had to overcome major obstacles to enroll in an undergraduate institution."
