Donors contribute to podiatric professorship (2/20/98)More than 200 donors including former First Lady Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson and two former Texas governors have contributed more than $100,000 toward the new Louis T. Bogy, DPM, Professorship in Podiatric Medicine and Surgery at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
Podiatry is the medical specialty focusing on the human foot.
Created less than one year ago to honor Dr. Bogy, a Texas podiatric medicine pioneer, the professorship is the first in podiatry in a medical school in the United States.
A fitting honoree for the new professorship, Dr. Bogy's efforts to create a residency training program for podiatrists in Texas helped found the existing program at the Health Science Center where he served as chief of residency training from 1972 until 1977. Today, he remains chairman emeritus of the podiatry program, which now includes 15 resident positions, and he is clinical professor of orthopaedics at the Health Science Center.
Born the youngest of six children to Mr. and Mrs. I. F. Bogy and raised in Thrift, Texas in Wichita County, Dr. Bogy graduated from high school in Bridgeport in Wise County in 1939 and graduated from Decatur Baptist College in 1941. He served in the United States Army during World War II and following the war, graduated from Baylor University in 1948. He earned his podiatry degree cum laude from the Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine in 1952.
The new professorship is designed to enhance teaching and research in the field and will support salaries, teaching materials, visiting scholars, scientific meetings and other activities of the podiatry program.
In recent years, Dr. Bogy encouraged passage of the law approved by the Texas Legislature ensuring podiatrists access to admit patients and to practice in Texas hospitals.
