Milam appointed to chair oral surgery department (12-20-99)

Stephen B. Milam, D.D.S., Ph.D., a dentist and cell biologist whose research interests include chronic pain and degenerative diseases of the temporomandibular joint, has been appointed chairman of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

Dr. Milam, who joined the Health Science Center in 1993 as associate professor and later was promoted to professor, had served as acting chairman since 1998.

Dr. Milam earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree at the Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas and a certificate in anesthesiology from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. Subsequently he held teaching positions in pharmacology and anesthesiology at the Baylor College of Dentistry and The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, also in Dallas. He received Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from Baylor University in Waco.

In 1986 he had the option of earning a doctorate in pharmacology, but says he decided to go into an area he "knew the least about," cellular biology. He received his Ph.D. in that field from the Health Science Center in 1990 while completing his residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery. He spent two years on the faculty at the Baylor College of Dentistry, then returned to the Health Science Center to establish the research division in the oral and maxillofacial surgery department.

The department has established a national and international reputation. A large percentage of the patients treated by Dr. Milam and his colleagues are referred from other states and countries. "We have an outstanding program," he said. "Our undergraduates have scored extremely well on their board exams. Likewise, graduates of our residency program over the past decade have successfully completed their specialty board exams with a 100 percent pass rate."
