Cigarroa appointed to HHS public health preparedness panel

Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D., president of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, has accepted a two-year term on the Secretary's Council on Public Health Preparedness, a new advisory panel of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson extended the invitation. In establishing the Council, Secretary Thompson determined that a public health emergency exists as a consequence of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The Council advises the secretary on appropriate actions to respond to this public health emergency and similar emergencies.

Members are selected from state and local public health agencies, other components of the public health community, academia and other appropriate stakeholders. The panel advises the HHS about infrastructure to address public health emergencies, specifically bioterrorism; contingency planning for emergency response; and ways to improve preparedness at all levels.
