Hurst to lead UTHSC orthodontic residency program

C. Lynn Hurst, D.D.S., has been appointed director of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio's orthodontic residency program. He has been with the university for 15 years.

Dr. Hurst oversees the 33-month residency program for advanced training in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopaedics. Residents gain a broad knowledge and understanding of research methodology, growth and development, diagnosis, treatment planning, biomechanics, craniofacial anomalies, interdisciplinary dentistry, surgical orthodontics and teaching. Emphasis is placed on strong clinical and scholarly skills to prepare the resident for an academic career.

The orthodontic residency program, established in 1999, accepts three residents per year with the goal of meeting the shortage of orthodontic educators. Six residents currently are enrolled. The first graduating class is expected in 2003.

Dr. Hurst was selected following a national search. He received his D.D.S. degree at the Health Science Center. In addition to his faculty appointment, Dr. Hurst is in private practice specializing in orthodontics. He is licensed by the Texas State Dental Board and is certified by the American Dental Board of Orthodontics. He is active in numerous dental organizations.
