Student's volunteerism is internationally recognized

Fourth-year dental student Chelli Evans earned the Terry T. Tanaka Student Humanitarian Award from the Academy of Dentistry International (ADI).

The award was established in honor of Dr. Terry Tanaka, who is known for his service in needy communities, to recognize dental students for outstanding, exemplary volunteer services in the United States or in a foreign country.

Evans completed her latest missionary trip to Africa this summer. She volunteered in Kijabe, Kenya, providing dental care for missionaries and their families, teaching basic oral hygiene to Africans and offering appropriate oral treatment, and training clinic staff members to effectively run the clinic.

"It was a life-changing experience," Evans said. "I really feel called to do work like this after dental school." Dr. Tanaka will present the Student Humanitarian Award, which comes with a $500 scholarship, to Evans at ADI's U.S. Convocation Oct. 17-18.
