Urology chief develops surgical text and CD-ROM (7-15-99)With the click of a button, surgical students can have front-row seats for prostate surgery while using a textbook and supplementary CD-ROM developed by Ian M. Thompson, M.D., chief of the Division of Urology at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
Dr. Thompson recently had his textbook and CD-ROM, Surgery of the Prostate, published by Churchill Livingstone Inc. The volume resulted from collaboration between
Dr. Thompson and Martin Resnick, M.D., of Case-Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio.
The textbook includes detailed drawings of prostate surgery procedures and outlines different methods of surgery for various prostate diseases, but the unique training tool comes in the form of a companion CD-ROM that provides video footage of Dr. Thompson's methods during various recorded surgeries.
"We think this is the future," Dr. Thompson said of the CD-ROM component. "This gives you a three-dimensional view to be able to clarify a procedure. The combination of video and graphics allows people to better conceptualize what is happening."
Dr. Thompson is expected to release another textbook next spring.
